Demo guide and save carry-over

The Otterly Lost demo was a vertical slice of the opening hours, released in November 2025 and rebuilt on June 1, 2026 with a much longer quest chain. It was delisted from Steam on August 26, 2026, a month before launch.

What the demo actually contained

You start as Otto, washed up far from home, and meet an ancient turtle named Thalor who acts as your compass for the first stretch. The demo chain is roughly:

  1. Learn to swim, dive and glide, and pick up the Favorite Rock from Thalor.
  2. Gather the ingredients for Thalor's sea salad — the step most players stall on.
  3. Help the neighbours around Turtle Bay while collecting shells, the game's currency.
  4. Find the digging and cutting tools that unlock blocked routes.
  5. Upgrade abilities at least once, which is where the demo build ends.

The demo slice included two farming communities, a climbing canyon, the north mountain, a fishing cove, a frog pond and Thalor's home, according to press hands-on coverage from that period. The developers have said the full game contains at least twice as many areas.

The sea salad quest

Thalor asks for three ingredients and tells you where each one grows. The wording matters because two of them are easy to mix up:

IngredientWhere it is
3 crunchy lily padsstill ponds — look for flat water without current
6 leaves of tender cave lettuceunderwater caves
13 ripe shoreberriesthe coast, growing where the water meets land

Lily pads are the usual bottleneck: ponds are away from the main quest path, and the pads sit on the surface, so diving past them is easy. Bring the whole list with you instead of making three trips.

Shells, tools and the map

  • Shells are collected everywhere and spent in shops; purchase dialogues display your running total, and 40 shells buys early cosmetics.
  • Tools are the demo's real progression: the rock breaks shellrocks, sea urchins and crates, but digging spots and some vines need the digging tool and a cutting tool.
  • The map and journal only fill in as you discover landmarks, so the journal is a record of what you have done, not a to-do list of everything in the world.
  • Fast travel arrives with buoys; the demo added one inside the Tides Cave to mark the water surface.
