Tools, abilities and upgrades
Otterly Lost gates progress with tools, not levels. There is one permanent companion — the Favorite Rock — and a small set of tools and ability upgrades that decide where you can go.
Tools
| Tool | What it does | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Favorite Rock | Base tool: smashes shellrocks, sea urchins, crates and brittle obstacles, with free movement while swinging | Given by Thalor at the start |
| Digging tool | Digs marked patches of ground and sand for shells, worms and hidden items | From the digging quest chain |
| Cutting tool | Cuts vines and underwater growth that blocks routes | Found later in the demo chain |
| Crafted tools | Further tools built at a workshop once you have materials | Crafted, per the demo's "now I build tools" step |
The rock was reworked during the demo period: instead of locking Otto into a fixed animation, interacting now happens while he moves, which is what makes gathering feel fast.
Ability upgrades
The official site lists four upgrades, and the demo lets you buy at least one of them:
- Swim faster — cuts travel time between islands
- Jump higher — clears ledges you can only glide over at first
- Climb easier — opens the climbing canyon's taller walls
- Glide further — extends the distance you can cross from a jump
Press hands-on coverage notes that gliding and sprinting are limited by stamina and that stamina upgrades come from items found in the world. The demo's first real upgrade station sits near the shipwreck.
Movement aids you should not miss
- Geysers launch Otto upward and are the fastest way out of some underwater basins.
- Fast-travel buoys mark routes you have already opened; the demo placed one inside the Tides Cave so the water surface is easy to find again.
- Climbing walls with the goat climber's stakes open vertical shortcuts, and the rock is not required for them.
How to plan upgrades
- Take swim speed early if you are doing ingredient quests — most backtracking is across open water.
- Take climb before exploring canyons, because several routes assume it.
- Take glide when you find high vantage points you cannot cross yet.
- Keep enough shells in hand for shops; upgrades and cosmetics compete for the same currency.
